Tyler Jones is the founder, president, and chief executive officer of SPEAK Strategic. A veteran political strategist and communicator, Jones has advised elected officials, candidates and businesses for over a decade.
In 2009, he was named Executive Director of the South Carolina House Democratic Caucus, becoming the youngest caucus director in the country.
From 2013 to 2016, he served as Senior Advisor and Spokesman for South Carolina House Minority Leader Todd Rutherford and the House Democratic Caucus, where, among other projects, he helped craft the legislative and political strategy to remove the Confederate flag from the statehouse grounds and pass the first roads bill in a generation.
In 2015, he was named State Director for Governor Martin O’Malley’s presidential campaign in South Carolina. Jones has also worked for former U.S. Senator John Edwards (D-NC) and, most recently, served as senior advisor to Beto O’Rourke’s presidential campaign.
In 2018, Jones served as chief strategist and general consultant for Joe Cunningham’s upset campaign in SC-01, a R+13 district that had not been held by a Democrat for 40 years. On Election Day, FiveThirtyEight’s Nate Silver gave Cunningham a 9% chance of winning. The Charleston Post and Courier called it “the biggest upset in modern South Carolina history,” and “The Hill” described Cunningham’s victory as “one of the biggest political upsets of the decade.”
Jones also led upset victories in other parts of the state including Columbia State Rep. Beth Bernstein, who defeated an eight-year incumbent Republican by 13 points in the biggest surprise of the 2012 election cycle and Charleston County Treasurer Mary Tinkler, who defeated a 20-year Republican incumbent in 2016.
Jones was born and raised in New Bern, North Carolina. He is a die-hard fan of the Chicago Cubs and the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. In his free time, Jones enjoys attending sporting events and concerts. He and his wife, Lauren, a clinical pharmacist at the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Administration Hospital in Charleston, live on Johns Island with their daughter, Afton, and their dog, Leia.
