Stop the HIT

Public Affairs

SPEAK worked on behalf of the national Stop the HIT coalition to lead the South Carolina effort in persuading Congress to successfully repeal the Health Insurance Tax (HIT). The HIT tax, if enacted, would have cost over $16 billion in 2020 and further driven up the cost of health insurance for businesses. It was expected to reduce the workforce by hundreds of thousands of jobs and cost each family up to $5,000 in higher premiums over the next decade.

We built a coalition across South Carolina that consisted of small-business owners, their employees, and associations working to put an end to the HIT tax. SPEAK generated statewide support by gathering allies, publishing media pieces, and having allies engage with Congressional offices. Our effort culminated with a roundtable discussion between small businesses, associations, and a member of congress. In the end, the Coalition was successful in repealing the HIT tax for perpetuity.
